Automated Climate Control System for Black Soldier Fly Lab.
April 2024

Key Implementations:
⚡ Electrical System Installation – Complete wiring setup for the lab’s automation infrastructure.
𖣘 Automated Ventilation – Small limit switches were installed to control window openings and closings, allowing natural air circulation for climate regulation.
🌡️ Temperature Management via Bitcoin Mining – A 3kW Avalon miner was integrated into the system, operating based on ambient temperature. Since mining generates consistent heat, this serves a dual purpose:
Maintaining Required Temperatures (24-30°C), even at night.
Generating Bitcoin as a byproduct of heat production.
💨 Automated Humidity Control – A humidifier was installed and programmed to maintain optimal humidity levels between 70-80%.
💡 Optimized Lighting Conditions – Since the flies require strong light exposure but are kept in a laboratory, the following lighting strategy was implemented:
During the day, automated window openings allow natural sunlight.
At night, an LED strip provides the necessary illumination.
Project Description
This project involved automating a specialized conditioning laboratory for Black Soldier Flies (BSF), ensuring optimal environmental conditions for their lifecycle. 🪰 BSF larvae are highly efficient in organic waste processing and are widely used for sustainable protein production in animal feed. However, their development requires precise control of temperature, humidity, airflow, and lighting.
The automation system was designed to replicate ideal tropical conditions, ensuring high hatch rates, accelerated larval growth, and overall improved yield.
At the company where I worked, this automation was requested to support several key initiatives:
Assisting in recycling organic waste by utilizing BSF larvae for decomposition.
Using the larvae as a natural, high-protein feed source for chickens within the project.
Establishing a breeding stock to ensure continuous BSF reproduction.
Packaging and selling nutrient-rich BSF larvae in sealed bags, providing an alternative to commercially adulterated chicken feed, which can negatively affect egg quality.
Project Development
♾️ Microcontroller-Based Automation & Data Monitoring – A microcontroller managed the entire system, continuously transmitting real-time data (temperature, humidity, mining activity, window status) to the company's local server API for monitoring and optimization.
